Successful treatment takes a variety of disciplines and professional experience, and the IDTC multidisciplinary team approach to treatment does exactly that, utilizing the skill and expertise of all members of the treatment team.
IDTC is nationally recognized as a leader in providing intensive specialized residential treatment for children and young adults whose needs challenge us to find unique treatment solutions. We are dedicated to providing the intensive supports needed for our children to be successful and transition back to less restrictive services as therapeutically indicated.
Our treatment program has several integral components. Among them are individual therapy and group therapy, year-round educational/vocational programming, and independent living skills training.
The Social Services Department is comprised of Masters Level Clinicians/Social Workers, Psychologists and Psychiatrists.
Our Social Workers function as the children's primary therapists/case managers, responsible for providing individual psychotherapy, group therapy, family counseling/therapy, individualized Behavior Management Plans, child management training, and staff education. The Social Workers also coordinate all aspects of the residents’ Individual Treatment Plans (ITPs). This includes maintaining family, county, collateral and court contacts, supervising the ITPs and facilitating discharge planning.
The Social Services Department also includes psychological and psychiatric staff, who assist in developing and implementing the ITPs and behavioral intervention strategies. A full-time psychologist is on staff and functions as a Behavior Specialist, developing, implementing, reviewing and evaluating specifically prescribed Behavior Management Plans. The Psychologist is also available for consultation to the Social Workers, and is available for formal diagnostic evaluations. Consulting Psychiatrists provide psychiatric diagnostic evaluation and medication review and monitoring.

IDTC’s nationally recognized school programs are designed to educate special needs children. Educational needs are different for every child, so individual attention and planning is crucial in the success of every treatment and educational plan.
After an extensive evaluation to determine the unique strengths and needs of each child, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed creating an ongoing program using techniques tailored to meet each student’s needs. Special Education teachers with certification, training and experience in cognitive, learning, emotional or behavioral disabilities implement the Individual Education Plan. All teachers at IDTC are certified by the State of Indiana in one or more of the following areas: General Education, Learning Disabilities, Mildly or Moderately Mentally Handicapped, Emotionally Handicapped and Severely/Profoundly Handicapped. The devoted teaching staff of IDTC creates a sensory-rich learning environment encompassing sensory integration, and sensory and vestibular stimulation. On-staff licensed Occupational Therapists and certified Speech Pathologists complement the teaching staff, providing the highest quality care available.
Program components include academic instruction, physical education, occupational therapy, pre-vocational and vocational training, speech and language therapy, and independent living skills training.

IDTC’s commitment to providing the best in educational opportunities for dually-diagnosed individuals doesn’t stop with just our residents. Children who are able to remain living in their own homes, but are unable to be maintained in their community special education programs, are accepted from local area school districts to attend class on campus as Day Students.
Striving to help individuals achieve the highest level of independence possible, IDTC works with a student’s local school district, with the goal of returning each child to his or her community school system following a successful period of therapeutic intervention and academic services.

Daily life for our residents begins with the supervision of our dedicated Youth Care Staff. Responsible for the implementation of the residents’ Individual Treatment Program, the Youth Care Staff teaches day-to-day life skills including coping skills, productive use of leisure time, personal hygiene, eating, dressing, bathing, and selection of appropriate clothing, as well as recreational activities and developing positive peer and adult relationships.
Each Youth Care Staff member acts as a guide for residents throughout their day from classes to meals and everything in between, providing compassionate care and consistency in the residents’ daily lives.
Youth Care staff members also enjoy the opportunity to get residents involved in Special Olympics activities, enhancing cooperation and learning skills and significantly improving self-image and confidence.

Compassionate and caring service doesn’t stop at the classroom or on the units. Our support staff is made up of individuals committed to providing the best living and learning environment in the country. Every member of the IDTC staff from food services to housekeeping to maintenance knows that at the end of the day, it is all about the kids.
The Center comes to life as residents fill the cafeteria with laughter and activity during meals. Taking pride in creating delicious and nutritious meals, the dietary staff provides a meal plan for all residents, which can be individually tailored to meet specific dietary needs. All menus are reviewed on a regular basis by a licensed dietitian. The Food Services staff also takes great pride in celebrating seasonal activities, providing special food for special activities, and celebrating individual birthdays.
The cleanliness of IDTC is one of the first things many people notice. It’s thanks to the hard working members of the housekeeping, laundry and maintenance staffs committed to providing the cleanest and safest living environment available.

IDTC operates open residential units on both Campuses. These units are licensed as Child Caring Institutions (CCIs) and provide a highly structured, therapeutic environment for dually diagnosed children who are able to respond in an open setting.

In addition to open units, IDTC has the ability to provide secure treatment alternatives, and serves very different types of children even within the Secure Units themselves. The Secure Units consist of Private Secure Units for higher functioning children, and Secure Units for much lower functioning children, who may not have the capacity for self-safety.
Working hand and hand with children who have Intensive Treatment Needs or those whose behavior is uncontrollable, unpredictable or dangerous can be one of the most challenging aspects of working with children with dual-diagnoses. Finding caregivers who understands these challenges is critical. Children and young adults with these behavioral issues need the added benefit of a secure setting while still receiving therapeutic care and attention to help improve overall functioning.
The goal of both our Intensive Treatment Needs and Private Secure Units is not to keep our residents in a restrictive setting, but to significantly decrease the identified inappropriate behaviors, improve social and self-care skills and develop functional skills in hopes of preparing them for a rewarding life in less restrictive settings.

The Intensive Treatment Needs Unit (ITN) at IDTC offers the additional care, structure, and supervision needed to provide treatment for dually diagnosed children who experience uncontrollable and unpredictable behaviors that significantly interfere with their day-to-day living. We have a highly professional staff, committed to developing and implementing creative treatment programs that support each student in their skill acquisition process.
ITN residents may be non-verbal, functioning at a moderate to severe range of mental retardation, seriously organically or neurologically impaired, and may carry diagnoses that include:
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
- Autistic Spectrum Disorders
- Pervasive Developmental Disorder
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- Oppositional Defiant Disorder
- Intermittent Explosive Disorder
The focus of our Intensive Treatment program is to develop and implement a variety of intervention and treatment strategies with specific outcome measures and criteria. This focus, coupled with additional treatment, support, structure and supervision help our students achieve skills, improve their day to day functioning, social and self-help skills, preparing them to reenter less restrictive settings.
In addition to our comprehensive treatment services, the ITN has the ability to offer a higher degree of staff supervision, depending on the needs of the child.

Our Private Secure Living areas offer a safe, secured treatment environment that provides structure and safety for students experiencing emotional and/or behavioral challenges that are unpredictable, uncontrollable or dangerous to themselves or others.
Residents in IDTC’s Private Secure Living areas may come to us through juvenile corrections, but would not be well served in traditional correctional programs. These children may be functioning at a borderline, mild or moderately mentally retarded range and may carry diagnoses that include:
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Conduct Disorder
- Oppositional Defiant Disorder
- Intermittent Explosive Disorder
The focus of our Private Secure Program is not keeping students in secure living spaces, but to focus on providing comprehensive individualized treatment and additional structure with the ultimate goal of preparing them for a rewarding life in less-restrictive environments.
Our Private Secure Units provide the additional structure and supervision necessary to effectively treat children whose behaviors are unpredictable and dangerous.
